The first anniversary of the Asian Games. What opportunities do large-scale stadiums bring to Zhejiang Sports-

On October 7, 2023, we took a closer look at the lasting impact of the Hangzhou Asian Games, which concluded on October 8 of last year. The Games have significantly shaped the landscape of sports development in Zhejiang, creating new opportunities and pathways. One of the most notable legacies is the establishment of modern, high-standard sports venues that continue to enhance the region’s sports culture and overall fitness environment.

These state-of-the-art facilities in Zhejiang are a major attraction for international competitions. With their world-class design and construction, they are equipped to meet the rigorous specifications required for global events, ensuring smooth operations and an exceptional experience for spectators.

Upcoming events such as the Hangzhou Tennis Open, the Asian Taekwondo Championships, the U23 Men’s Baseball World Cup, and the Asian Rugby Series are being hosted in these venues, showcasing both their global standards and Zhejiang’s effective utilization of the Asian Games legacy.

Moreover, hosting large-scale international events has begun to draw athletes from around the world to Zhejiang, allowing them to experience the region’s unique charm. Marin Cilic, a former US Open champion, highlighted this after his victory at the Hangzhou Tennis Open. He expressed his enjoyment of the city, stating, “I’ve had a wonderful time here over the past few days. The city has a unique charm and atmosphere, along with stunning scenery. I hope to win a few more matches and spend more time here.” His ultimate success in the tournament exemplifies how international events provide a platform for Zhejiang to showcase itself on a global stage.

Additionally, the effective use of modern sports facilities is elevating the overall sports environment in Zhejiang. The 2024 U23 Men’s Baseball World Cup in Shaoxing saw twelve elite teams from five continents compete at the Shaoxing Baseball and Softball Cultural Center, drawing a significant fan base. The bronze medal match between China and Nicaragua was a sell-out, reflecting the growing interest in baseball—a sport that has traditionally been less popular in China.

Shaoxing has made commendable progress in promoting baseball and softball, hosting events like the National Baseball Championship Cup and collaborating with national teams to introduce these sports to schools. As baseball and softball gain traction, they are becoming symbols of the city, showcasing not just the top-notch facilities but also the thriving sports culture in Zhejiang.

Beyond hosting major sporting events and enhancing the sports culture, these modern venues play a vital role in promoting public fitness. With supportive policies in place, the benefits of the “Asian Games dividend” are being felt across the region.

The “Big Lotus” and “Little Lotus” venues at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center have left a memorable impression since their reopening to the public in January. Many residents are taking advantage of these facilities, including tennis enthusiast Xu Xiaoming, who praised the outdoor courts for their high quality and wind protection. Another visitor, Uncle Wu, shared his excitement about experiencing the “Big Lotus” up close during his workout.

It’s evident that the public accessibility of these facilities not only meets the community’s demand for high-quality sports environments but also fosters a connection between residents and the legacy of the Asian Games. This engagement is expected to encourage increased participation in sports, enhance fitness initiatives, and stimulate sports consumption, injecting new vitality into Zhejiang’s sports industry.
