21 People Feared Dead as Two Boats Collide in Lagos
In a recent interview about the devastating boat accident in Imore town, located in the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State, reporter Sunday Ehigiator revealed that at least 21 passengers are feared to have drowned. Eyewitnesses recounted a distressing scene where two boats, each with 16 passengers on board, collided and capsized in the lagoon.
In a statement released yesterday, Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police, shared that the incident was first reported to the Ilashe police division around 7:00 p.m. “Emergency responders, including marine police and local divers, were quickly dispatched to the scene,” Hundeyin noted. “They successfully rescued 11 passengers who had sustained injuries and promptly transported them to the Naval Hospital in Navy Town, Alakija for urgent medical attention.”
Hundeyin elaborated on the chain of events, saying, “On October 7, 2024, around 7:00 p.m., we received an emergency call from the Ilashe Division regarding two unregistered passenger boats, each carrying 16 individuals, which reportedly collided in the lagoon. Tragically, this collision resulted in the boats capsizing, causing several passengers to drown along with their belongings.”
As recovery efforts for the missing passengers are ongoing, Hundeyin confirmed that search operations are in full effect and that an investigation is underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
