In the first three quarters, electricity consumption in Guangzhou increased by 7.03%
On October 15, the Guangzhou Power Supply Bureau of China Southern Power Grid announced that the total electricity consumption in Guangzhou for the first three quarters of this year (January to September) reached 98.519 billion kilowatt-hours, marking a year-over-year increase of 7.03%.
In a recent interview, a representative from the power supply bureau shared insights on the city’s electricity usage across different sectors. The breakdown for the first nine months of the year showed that power consumption in the primary, secondary, and tertiary industries, as well as residential use, totaled 613 million kilowatt-hours, approximately 37.747 billion kilowatt-hours, 37.778 billion kilowatt-hours, and 22.382 billion kilowatt-hours, respectively. Notably, the tertiary industry exhibited the most significant growth, accounting for 38.35% of total electricity consumption, which saw an impressive increase of 9.45%. This growth reflects an active consumer market in Guangzhou. Additionally, residential power consumption grew by 6.38%, making up 22.72% of the city’s overall usage, indicating an enhancement in the quality of life for residents.
From an industrial standpoint, electricity consumption in the sector reached 36.834 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 5.35%, underscoring its role as a stabilizing force in the economy. Particularly noteworthy was the 64.58% surge in electricity use in specialized equipment manufacturing, alongside a 14.85% rise in the manufacturing of computers, communications, and other electronic devices. These robust figures further affirm Guangzhou’s commitment to prioritizing industry and manufacturing as key drivers of economic growth.
Electricity consumption data serves as a barometer for economic activity. The first nine months of this year have also seen rapid growth in emerging industries and new sectors. For instance, electricity consumption in the manufacture of photovoltaic equipment and components skyrocketed by 222.87%, while specialized equipment manufacturing rose by 64.5%. Furthermore, sectors such as computer, communication, and other electronic device manufacturing, as well as medical instrument production and aerospace manufacturing, all reported double-digit percentage increases in electricity usage.
As the region continues to embrace its industrial ambitions, these statistics illustrate not only progress but also a strategic vision for the city’s economic future.
