Another World War II bomb- -Two 250kg unexploded bombs were found next to Miyako Airport in Okinawa-
Recently, two unexploded bombs, believed to date back to World War II and weighing 250 kilograms each, were discovered near Miyako Airport in Okinawa Prefecture. This alarming find prompted Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to announce emergency inspections at five airports, starting on October 16.
According to NHK, officials from the Okinawa Prefectural Government and Miyako Island City revealed that the two unexploded bombs were found in farmland adjacent to Miyako Airport on October 8 and 11. The discovery site is merely separated from the airport by a road. Notably, the size of these bombs is consistent with a similar unexploded ordnance that detonated recently at Miyazaki Airport.
Experts speculate that these bombs may have been used by British forces in joint attacks with American troops on Miyako Island during the Pacific War.
Historically, Miyako Airport was a former base for the Japanese Navy, and in the previous year, five American-made 50-kilogram bombs were also found in the vicinity.
Officials from the Miyako Island City Hall stated that the two newly discovered unexploded bombs will be handled by the Japan Self-Defense Forces, emphasizing their commitment to coordinate swiftly for timely removal.
In parallel, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism commenced emergency inspections at Miyazaki, Sendai, Fukuoka, Naha, and Matsuyama airports to ensure that no other unexploded ordnance remains undiscovered.
