Bedbug bite hurts and itches, medical expenses are 15,000 yuan, Michigan woman sues casino hotel

During an interview, Mississippi resident Krystal Nailer shared a harrowing experience she had while staying at a hotel in Las Vegas. She vividly recounted the severe bedbug bites she endured, which left her with intense itching, pain, and lasting scars. Faced with these overwhelming challenges, Nailer has taken the step of filing a lawsuit in search of compensation.

Nailer claims that due to the hotel’s negligence, she has already spent over $15,000 on medical expenses related to her treatment. She anticipates even more costs ahead and is currently pursuing legal action to recover damages, in addition to her attorney fees.

On October 8, Nailer’s lawyer filed a lawsuit in the Eighth Judicial District Court of Clark County, naming Stratosphere Gaming LLC and Golden Entertainment as defendants.

According to the complaint, Nailer checked into the STRAT Hotel on October 16, 2022. Just two days later, she woke up scratching all over, only to discover painful welts on her left leg and buttocks. Disturbingly, she also found a bedbug on her bed. Nailer emphasized that prior to her stay, she had never encountered bedbugs at home nor had she ever been bitten.

After notifying the front desk, a hotel employee came to inspect her room. Following her report, the staff member provided her with medication to ease her discomfort.

While the STRAT Hotel has not commented directly on the case, they provided a statement to USA Today from the Nevada Resort Association issued in February. The statement emphasized their commitment to the health and safety of both guests and staff.

The association highlighted that with approximately 155,000 hotel rooms and 41 million visitors annually, only four rooms had reported issues with bedbugs in the last five months—illustrating that such incidents are exceedingly rare and isolated. They further noted that the low number of reported cases reflects the thorough and proactive health, safety, and pest control measures employed by Las Vegas resorts.

The association also mentioned that bedbugs can be inadvertently introduced to any location through luggage and clothing. When a staff member identifies that a guest has been affected by bedbugs, the affected guest is swiftly relocated to a new room while the infested room is closed off for extermination.
