Governor signs bill to incorporate AI literacy into K-12 curriculum
Recently, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a landmark set of 17 bills focused on artificial intelligence, including a pivotal piece of legislation that integrates AI literacy into K-12 education throughout the state.
This new law mandates that AI literacy will be a crucial factor in the review and approval process for textbooks and educational resources. The curriculum is set to encompass vital topics such as the mechanics of AI, its fundamental concepts, practical applications, limitations, ethical considerations, and its impact on the world. California has long been a leader in navigating the challenges posed by rapidly advancing technology.
The governor’s office points out that more than half of the world’s top 50 AI developers are located in California, with many based in Silicon Valley. Assemblymember Marc Berman believes that this new law, which will take effect next year, will provide California students with the necessary skills and training to become ethical and responsible users of AI as it becomes increasingly prevalent. The bill received unanimous backing from both the California Assembly and Senate earlier this year.
Berman, the architect of the bill, emphasized in a written statement that while AI has the potential to greatly enhance our lives, it is essential to understand how to use it responsibly. “Today’s children and young people must learn to navigate a world and job market transformed by rapidly evolving AI technology,” he stated. The California Chamber of Commerce is collaborating with Berman to ensure that students gain the essential skills and knowledge needed to thrive as consumers, voters, and employees in today’s society.
Although generative AI tools are a relatively recent development, the Chamber of Commerce urges state officials to recognize the growing presence of these technologies in daily life and to educate students on how to effectively leverage these tools for their benefit.
