On October 20, a new book launch for the “Looking Back to Know Forward” series (Volume 1) took place at the Yuelu Academy of Hunan University in Changsha, China. This series revives and presents classic works from the history of modern Chinese thought, illustrating the evolution of Chinese modern thought and the process of integrating Marxism into Chinese culture.

The “Looking Back to Know Forward” series, published by Hunan People’s Publishing House and edited by Professor Chen Peiyong, the Associate Dean of the School of Marxism at Peking University, features renowned essays from influential thinkers such as Chen Duxiu, Qu Qiubai, Cai Hesun, Yun Daiying, Huang Yanpei, and Guo Moruo. By offering fresh perspectives on classics—ranging from “Advice to Youth” to “Superfluous Words” and from “Dialogue in the Cave” to “The Jia Shen Dialogue”—the series conducts accessible readings that delve into the historical context, the trajectory of ideas, and the essence of thought, allowing readers to appreciate the beauty and wisdom of these timeless works.

Sharing his insights during the launch, Professor Chen emphasized that the selected works are not only highly readable but also pivotal in shaping history. He focused on interpreting significant passages and core ideas, using short segments and memorable quotes to bridge the gap between history, thought, and contemporary reality. “I hope this series continues to be published and reaches more readers,” he stated.

Former Director of the National Office for Philosophy and Social Science Planning and Professor Zhang Guozuo remarked that the themes of the “Looking Back to Know Forward” series are particularly meaningful. He highlighted the importance of studying history for enlightenment, increased faith, moral cultivation, and practical action, asserting that only by truly engaging with red classics can one understand the strengths of the Communist Party of China, the advantages of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and the efficacy of Marxism.

Chen Yuxiang, Secretary of the Party Committee at Yuelu Academy and a professor and PhD advisor, believes that interpreting and revitalizing modern ideological classics, especially Marxist texts, is crucial for inheriting and developing Marxism with Chinese characteristics. He emphasized that the publication of the “Looking Back to Know Forward” series showcases the scholarly responsibility and commitment of the editors and the publishing house.

On the same day, a theoretical seminar titled “Reading Red Classics Together to Forge a New Chapter of the Era” was held, where experts and scholars engaged in in-depth discussions on the publication of the new series and the historical significance and contemporary value of red classics.
