Ministry of Foreign Affairs- Premier Li Qiang’s visits to Laos and Vietnam achieved positive results

At a routine press conference on October 14, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning addressed reporters on the recent official visit of Premier Li Qiang to Laos and Vietnam from October 11 to 14.

When asked about the outcomes of this trip, Mao emphasized that both Laos and Vietnam are important socialist neighbors of China and noted that this was Premier Li’s first visit to the two countries during his tenure. She stated the visit achieved significant results.

Firstly, Mao highlighted the strategic importance of building a bilateral community with a shared future. She mentioned that Lao officials expressed their view of China as an inseparable good neighbor and partner, while Vietnamese representatives reiterated that their government considers relations with China a strategic priority in their foreign policy. Both nations view each other’s development as an opportunity and a positive factor for regional and global growth. They agreed to uphold a long-term strategic perspective on their bilateral relations, supporting each other in advancing their respective socialist construction and distinct modernization efforts, and working to implement the key consensus reached by their top leaders.

Secondly, she noted a reaffirmation of principled stances on major issues. Both Laos and Vietnam stressed their commitment to the One China principle, opposing all forms of Taiwan independence, and affirming support for three global initiatives. The parties emphasized the need to resist bloc confrontations, reject power politics, and oppose unilateralism in all its forms. They also agreed to strengthen coordination within multilateral frameworks and actively pursue cooperation on the three global initiatives, advocating for a multipolar world characterized by equality and inclusive economic globalization.

Lastly, Mao mentioned a consensus on deepening comprehensive strategic cooperation. China and Laos will continue to align the Belt and Road Initiative with Laos’ strategy to transform from a landlocked to a land-linked country, expanding practical cooperation in trade, investment, energy, minerals, and more. They aim to accelerate development along the China-Laos railway and enhance cooperative outcomes. Meanwhile, China and Vietnam will strengthen their development strategies, working on infrastructure connectivity for railways and highways, as well as smart customs services, to improve trade and investment facilitation and maintain stable supply chains. Both sides are also looking into establishing cross-border economic cooperation zones and exploring new areas of collaboration in information technology, renewable energy, digital economy, and critical minerals. They are set to organize activities to celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Vietnam next year and to promote cultural exchanges.
