More than 100 countries support China’s proposal at the Human Rights Council to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
On September 9, during the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, a resolution commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was adopted by consensus. This important resolution was co-sponsored by representatives from several countries, including China, Denmark, France, Kenya, and Mexico, and garnered widespread support, with 112 participating nations backing it.
Ambassador Chen Xu, the Permanent Representative of China to the UN Office in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, introduced the draft resolution. He noted that nearly three decades ago, the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing resulted in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which marked a significant milestone in advancing women’s rights globally. While there has been notable progress in enhancing women’s social standing over the past 30 years, he acknowledged that challenges remain in fully implementing the principles set forth in the Declaration. The goal of this resolution is to reinvigorate the spirit of the Declaration and reflect a collective commitment to accelerating gender equality and tackling existing challenges collaboratively.
Countries including France, Finland, Gambia, Sudan, the Dominican Republic, Chile, Argentina, and Japan expressed their appreciation during the adoption of the resolution. They praised China’s leadership in proposing this vital initiative and stressed the importance of working together to promote the protection of women’s rights worldwide.
Additionally, China has proposed hosting another global summit on women in 2025 to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Women’s Conference. The unanimous adoption of this resolution by the Human Rights Council is viewed as a significant step toward building consensus and mobilizing efforts to translate shared aspirations into collective global action.
