The first Taekwondo Open in Xi’an was held

On October 6th, Xi’an made history by hosting its inaugural Taekwondo Open Championship, drawing nearly 400 enthusiasts and skilled competitors from around the city.

The championship showcased a diverse range of competitions, including sparring in both individual and team categories, poomsae competitions that featured team, mixed doubles, and individual events, as well as exciting demonstration events highlighting taekwondo dance, breaking, and special techniques. Participants spanned a wide age range, from as young as 4 years old in the preschool category to those over 18 in the open division, competing across various age and weight classifications.

Statistics reveal that over 10,000 residents in Xi’an participate in taekwondo annually, with more than 6,000 receiving professional training in the sport.

During the opening ceremony, Song Minyong, president of the Xi’an Taekwondo Association, emphasized the significance of the championship, stating, “The first Xi’an Taekwondo Open Championship is aimed at promoting and advancing the professional development of taekwondo in this historic city, while also showcasing the achievements of our local taekwondo scene.”

The atmosphere at the event was electric, with competitors from various taekwondo associations, schools, dojos, and youth sports clubs putting their skills on full display. Participants demonstrated impressive agility, powerful kicks, and precise maneuvers, truly highlighting the unique allure of taekwondo.

“I’ve been practicing taekwondo for over seven years, and my love for the sport has allowed me to reach the podium in various competitions,” shared participant Yang Yuxi. “It’s a real honor and thrill to compete during the National Day holiday. This event not only sharpens our skills but also helps us forge many new friendships.”

The championship was organized by the Xi’an Social Sports Guidance Center and Xi’an Sports School, with co-hosting support from the Xi’an Taekwondo Association and the Cultural, Tourism, and Sports Bureau of Yanta District.
