William Patterson University Chinese Art Center held- Deep in the Clouds-Gao Yun Comparative Lecture on Chinese and Western Art and Chinese Painting Demonstration_1
Renowned contemporary Chinese artist Gao Yun will be visiting William Paterson University from October 28 to 31 as part of the university’s Distinguished Artist Lecture Series. The event is organized by the Chinese Art Center, the Department of Art, and the College of the Humanities and Social Sciences at William Paterson University.
Gao Yun, a graduate of the Nanjing University of the Arts with a specialization in traditional Chinese painting, is recognized as a national first-class artist. He serves as an expert on the National Thematic Art Creation Committee of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China and is a distinguished professor at Nanjing University. Additionally, he holds significant roles such as a council member of the China National Academy of Painting and vice chairman of its Chinese Painting Committee, as well as president of the Jiangsu Province Chinese Painting Society. His previous positions include Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture, president and editor-in-chief of Jiangsu Fine Arts Publishing House, and director of the Jiangsu Provincial Museum of Art. He has served as a judge for the 10th to 14th National Art Exhibitions.
Gao Yun is celebrated for his elegance and versatility across multiple domains, creating works that are rich in thought and artistic expression. He has made a mark in various forms, including comic strips, traditional Chinese painting, and stamp design. His talent emerged early, earning him prestigious awards in the Chinese painting community, including gold, silver, and bronze medals at national art exhibitions and the top awards in stamp design and comic painting.
His famous piece, “Luo Lun Gankao,” won the highest award at the sixth National Art Exhibition and has been hailed as a masterpiece of 20th-century line drawing comic art. Gao Yun’s mastery of linework showcases his unique ability to blend traditional Bai Miao techniques with a contemporary aesthetic. His works exhibit a powerful brushstroke and decisive lines, offering a simple yet profound appeal that has set a milestone in the evolution of Chinese comic art. Throughout his career, Gao Yun has sought transcendent beauty, consistently exploring new frontiers in the artistic expression of Chinese painting, particularly in its ink techniques and conceptual depth.
The public lecture, titled “Clouds Deep: A Comparative Study of Chinese and Western Art,” will be led by Gao Yun and includes a live demonstration of Chinese painting.
