Zhanjuan Society Lecture Dr. Mao Xiaoling analyzes the history and poetry of Chinese sericulture
On November 2nd at 2 PM, the Chinese American Association, the Northern California National Chengchi University Alumni Association “Zhan Juan She,” and the Friends of Millbrae Library will host a talk at the Millbrae Public Library located at 2 Library Avenue, Millbrae. The presentation, titled “Chinese Sericulture: History and Poetry,” will be delivered by Dr. Mao Xiaoling, the president of the Chinese American Association.
Organizers emphasize that sericultural culture marks the genesis of Chinese civilization. The ancestors of the Chinese began cultivating mulberry trees and raising silkworms as early as the late Neolithic period, a practice that has now spanned over four thousand years. Silk, as the primary material for creating textiles, has profoundly impacted human civilization through its production in China and the dissemination along the Silk Road.
Dr. Mao will explore how China was the first to domesticate wild silkworms, cultivate mulberry trees systematically, and develop an industry centered around silk production and weaving. She will also present historical documentation from various regions of China, alongside archaeological findings that illustrate how sericulture has extended its significance beyond mere biological value. From emperors to farmers, this tradition has permeated all levels of society, forming a unique Chinese sericultural culture deeply rooted in the illustrious history of Chinese civilization. For thousands of years, this culture has influenced various aspects of life, including politics, economics, philosophy, religion, arts, and daily practices, becoming a vital symbol of Chinese cultural identity.
Dr. Mao, who currently serves as the president of the Chinese American Association, has an extensive background in biochemical research and education and has previously held the position of president of the National Federation of Chinese Schools in the United States.
